Help ! My favicon doesn't
work!
-
Use a free web host
like Geocities, Angelfire, Tripod?
-
If you are unable
to upload an ICO format image, the best you can do is remote link an
ico file from another site.
-
If you can upload
an ico format image, then check your path.
-
Using a masked
domain? With a frameset redirect?
-
The problem is in
the Frameset. If you are able to EDIT this... then you can add the
appropriate favicon info, title tags, etc. Most frameset html redirects
look like this ~>
-
Blank!..... This
means you have NOTHING for SEARCH ENGINES TOO!!! AND no CUSTOM TITLE
to show in address bar! Contact your Host/ Redirect provider to be
allowed to access that.
-
You can edit it?
make it look like the index tags of the index page you point to in
the redirect/ frameset.
-
No ability to edit?
Find a diff host! Hosting is dirt cheap.... if you look carefully
you can often find a full years hosting for what you maybe paying
now for a domain name and redirect.
-
Possible other
solutions ~> look for some bookmark scripts.... perhaps one will
have an option to direct to a specific icon file as well as a
specific url.

Where can I get free
favicons?
Help! My favicons
disappear off my favorites list!
-
The favicon file
resides in your temporary internet file and when you clear that ....
it's gone. You can use FavOrg to restore then to your favorites list.
-
or ... Quick tip.. grab
the upper left corner of your browser, then DRAG the mouse into the
address bar, the favicon should show then. You may need to do it twice.
Why don't I see the icon
in the address bar all the time.
-
This is an erratic
behavior from IE that began shortly after IE 5.5 came out. After you
bookmark a site, you may try refreshing the page, or even go to your
homepage, then back to refresh the favicon. F5 may also refresh
the icon.

Why not use PNG, GIF, or
BMP?
-
While those formats do
show FINE on Safari, Mozilla, etc, IE is still limited to the ICO format.
Most of my site log files show less than 10% alternate browser use at this
time. So, unfortunately, if you want it to work on the majority of sites,
you need to use ico.
Do I have to add the html
to use a favicon?
-
For most users, using a
favicon is as simple as dropping the favicon.ico in their web folder, no
code required.
-
Not on your own domain?
Then you will need to add the code.
What size should my
favicon be?
-
You can make your
favicon 500x500 and IE will reduce it / render it as a 16x16 image in
the favorites list and in the address bar. You are best off using
a no larger than 50x50 image. Symmetrical is also a good idea.....
One local company has smooshed their 300x750 pixel logo into their
favicon. ICK.
-
I recommend 32x32 at
SMALLEST ~ because if people CLICK the upper left corner of the browser,
and DRAG to the desktop. WOW! A customized shortcut icon right back to
the website!
Can I make an icon file
with more than one size image?
-
Sure.... I recommend
@icon sushi, a
great small freeware program. Easy to use too. Use this program if you
want to have a 16x16 icon, a 24x24 icon, a 32x32 icon etc, all in one
folder.
I use a MAC computer,
how do I convert to ico?
Can you see favicons on
AOL/ Prodigy/ CompuServe/ Earthlink and other proprietary browsers?
Will you make me a
favicon?
Will you ever offer a
gallery or library of favicons to link to? For Geocities or other free
server users?
